Running on SL-5500

Postby sitongia on Tue Oct 05, 2004 8:19 am

I flashed my 5500 to Sharp ROM 3.10.

It doesn't seem like my 5500 has enough RAM to run the golden apple. It starts up, then dies after a few seconds. system info shows little remaining RAM and the cache is small.

So, I installed Openzaurus because it has install ROM images that are partitioned to give one's choice for the amount of RAM.

I scp'd mypda over to the zaurus, logged in and ran ipkg install. Looks like it installed, except for a complaint about portmap.

I can't find the golden apple in the pages of apps.

Sorry, my fault: I needed to execute with root priviledge.

So, did it finally run on OpenZaurus? And what are your experiences?

That would be great as we have never tested ourselves yet - but are considering to switch to the GUI-less OZ version because we need a more modern X11-Server.

I didn't run it for very long. It was a bit too slow.

Also, I tried the mac sync software, and was disappointed that it doesn't yet sync iCal. I see that you are working on accomplishing a great deal, but I think the web page implies that all the items listed are currently working. It should be more clear what is working now and what is planned for the future.

Sincerely,

Installation on a Cacko/Crow ROM

Postby chrisl on Fri Sep 08, 2006 5:33 am

I have installed OpenStep a couple times, one with the SHARP ROM and the other on my Cack/Crow ROM. It worked kind of OK on the Sharp ROM 3.13. If was slow, rotated the screen and complained of low memory. Not surprising since the stock Sharp ROM or even the Sharp ROM with the 32-32 Cacko kernel leave very little RAM left. I was content on playing with this arrangement until I lost everything during a hard reset. I then re-flashed to a Cack/Crow 64-0 ROM, tried to install OpenStep and nothing happened. It would install, but no golden apple, xqt or anything else. I would really like to try it out on this ROM, since I have optimized things enough so even KOPI runs decently fast. I am certainly intrigued by the application suite available and even the way X-Windows is set up.

So, any ideas on how I can make it work?

Hi,
we are working on redesigned system frameworks which do need much less menory and should be even easier to install. I assume that it will still work on the SL-5500.
